Acupuncture (not dry needling) should be part of the ‘best care’ for your shoulder pain, in addition to physiotherapy (1). This includes frozen shoulder, bursitis, joint pain and swelling, rotator cuff pain and shoulder pain with reduced movement.
Acupuncture can be a safe and effective treatment for shoulder pain in the short to medium-term, when used alongside other management strategies. The use of acupuncture as a stand-alone treatment for long-term relief of shoulder pain cannot be justified based on these results (2).
Non-operative treatment options at the early stage of Shoulder Impingement Syndrome (SIS) should be considered as a combination of prescribed physiotherapy exercises with therapies such as kinesio taping and acupuncture (1).
Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy, localized corticosteroid injection, diacutaneous fibrolysis, and ultrasound therapy may be considered as the second-line treatment choices; however, low-level laser therapy and the localized injection of NSAIDs are not recommended (1).
For Frozen Shoulder the evidence suggests that acupuncture or electroacupuncture alone, or combined with electrotherapy or physiotherapy may be effective for reducing pain, improving function and range of motion in cases of frozen shoulder when compared to physiotherapy or electrotherapy alone (1).
Rotator cuff pain research suggests that acupuncture and electroacupuncture are more effective than sham/placebo acupuncture in reducing pain and improving function and quality of life in the short and long term (1).
